About The Anti-Diet

Why did I create "The Anti-Diet"?  Quite simply, I never had the money to spend on diets you have to pay for - books, special snacks, nutrition guides, etc.  Thanks to a friend, I discovered an iPhone app that not only kept track of the calories I ate, but also told me how many calories to eat to lose 2lbs per week.  I then started tracking calories - hardcore-style.  My journey has only just begun, and I hope I can give you some ideas, hope, confidence, and motivation along yours!
But why the "anti-diet"?
I take after my dad in that I am a cynic.  I hear about the fad diets and have zero interest.  I saw someone close to me quickly drop 100 pounds using Nutrisystem, thought "Wow, that's really something!" and then saw him gain it all back after getting off of the plan.  Basically, Nutrisystem is based on portion control.  You get good [looking] food, but not a lot of it - in other words...it's a diet.  So anyway, back to the cynic thing.  I kept reading people mention "lifestyle change" and thought it was just some ridiculous politically correct way of saying "diet" - okay, so you might not consider it "politically correct" but that's my umbrella word for a lot of things I think are stupid.  Soon after I downloaded MyFitnessPal at the recommendation of a friend, I started what I now consider to be my "lifestyle change".  I tell people I'm not dieting, I've only started a change in my lifestyle.  That's exactly what it is.  My lifestyle used to include bratwursts, cheeseburgers by the pound, potato chips, candy bars, never being able to pass up a bin of candy at work, and so on.  Once I started counting my calories and wanted to be serious about it, I was able to do away with all those things, or find alternatives (turkey > beef, chicken > pork, etc).  I decided to start looking at the calories on packages of food I bought and making decisions based on that number than many of us like to ignore (out of sight, out of mind).  You find that once you see the scale tip to the negative just once, or start to notice some room in your jeans, that your motivation increases 10-fold.  Soon after I noticed some changes in my body, I was motivated and it's all I could talk about.  I drove my wife, and probably quite a few people I work with nuts.
My hope is that I can gain some support and motivation as well as motivate and support you in our journey!

But I disagree with you!
I expect that many of you will, and that's quite ok!  Whatever works for you is fine by me!  My first 2 months counting calories and taking my health and weight seriously, I have lost roughly 25 pounds - and I hope that number will grow by another 20-25.  Some people do it with diet (there's that D word again) and exercise - some people eat what they want but work out 3 hours a day or run 3 miles a day - that's awesome!  I would love to have the discipline and time to work out for hours a day, but being a husband and father, as well as working a full time job and a wife in school in the evenings full time, I simply can't neglect my little boy to go to the gym all night while he sits in the nursery.  I've found something that works for me, and I wish you all th best in doing the same for you.
